72 Smalldive presented its ongoing theme on travel at the leading tradeshow for menswear Pitti Uomo 85. Think, Feel, and Travel is the core message to this recurring theme on travel.
The act of travelling often requires one to make a distinct break from one’s quotidian life, thus travelers are inadvertently ‘coerced’ to leave part of their belongings before setting off. In these present days, aided by technology, our fast paced lifestyle enters into an amorphous realm where many life’s activities are no longer distinctively separated; Travel, work, and social meetings are all intricately intertwined. With the blurring of the defining boundaries between work and leisure, accessories need to be updated with this fleeting lifestyle phenomenon, and also reflect the true personality of the traveler every day.
9 O’Clock Tales is a capsule collective of work and travel accessories catered for the ever-present lifestyle. The accessories in this collection are not only practical and functional, they also allow the owner’s personality to exude discretely & elegantly whilst at work, leisure, or on a trip.
As with all 72 Smalldive accessories, leather craftsmanship dominates the essence of the collection, balancing aesthetic with functionality, and structure with suppleness. The handmade quality of each accessory leaves a story with the owner, thereby amplifying the intimacy factor between product and owner. Whilst top grain calfskin leather, in varying textures, is the key material choice used in the collection, a selective choice of non-leather materials such as wool felt (lana cotta), woven wool fabric, and silk are also used for the label’s popular item L’avventura. Each texture, print, and colour, selected from the natural and urban landscapes observed whilst traveling, creates a state of thoughtful and emotional equilibrium; dusty pastels complements against a background of vivid hues, such as cayenne, Aegean blue, and classic autumnal earthy tones.
Newly added to the capsule is a line of handmade evening suede loafers to add a touch of insouciance to a black tie ensemble or to a casual jacket & jeans look. For the label’s first collection of footwear for men, the expertise of highly skilled shoemakers with decades of experience was sought. Each pair of loafers underwent 6 manual phases: modeling, cutting, hemming, assembling, ironing and finishing. Every delicate process is performed by a skilled craftsman in absolute precision. A special feature of this loafer is its flexibility and suppleness, made possible by sewing the shoe and the insole without any adhesive, making it a lightweight and supple accessory for the frequent traveler who would not wish to compromise style.
Taking a modern twist on the traditional, the collection complements dusty pastels with vivid bright hues and classic sartorial earth and countryside tones. Inspired by a mixture of natural (blooms and pastures) and urban landscape collected from travel abroad, the palette reflects a relaxed but confident male that is adept with modern social mores but also able to discretely & elegantly defy conventional wisdom.
Textures play a central role to the collection; allowing the individual to exude his personality through the choice of the materials and textures. Top grain leather in dollar or buffalo grains, woven wool fabrics, hot stamped wool felt are the key materials used in the collection.
